Things to see and do on Inis Meáin
- Cathaoir Synge.
It is said this was Synge’s favourite seat. Overlooking Sunda Ghrióra , the bay between Inis Mór and Inis Meáin, while he was reflecting on his thoughts.
- Clochán
A small beehive hut, built in the traditional way with stones corbelling in until it is possible to complete the roof with a capstone.
- Dún Chonchúir
This large oval ring fort, with a rectangular outwork, dates back to the first centuries AD. It is said it was built by Conchúir, brother of Aonghasa of the Fir Bolg. It is located on one of the highest points of the island. The fort contains many hut-foundations.
- Teach Synge
The house were John Millington Synge, Anglo-Irish author and playwright was hosted in the summer from 1898 to 1902. It was here that he got inspiration for some of his plays as Riders to the Sea and The Playboy of the Western World.
- Séipéil Eoin agus Naomh Muire gan Smál
This church was erected in 1939 with the stones from the old church (15th century) across the road. The altar is made by James Pearse, father of Pádraic Pearse. The glass stained windows come from the studio of Harry Clarke. The stoup, plaque and font are from the old church.
- Teampall na Seacht Mac Rí and Tobar Chinndeirge
Very little is remained of this church. Only a little grave is left and a holy well. This used to be a famous place for pilgrimage for all of Connacht.
- Dún Fearbhaidh
This stone fort dating from 1-7th centuries AD is unusual in being almost square instead of circular.
- Cill Cheannanach
The church dates from the 8th-9th century AD. It is complete except for the roof. There is an old cemetery where the islanders buried their people until 50 years ago.
- Leaba Dhiarmada agus Ghráinne
This megalithic stone dates from 4000-1400BC. It is a wedge gallery grave.
- Cloch an Aifrinn (near the new pier)
In the beginning of the 19th century the parish priest from Cill Ronain (Inis Mór) read Mass here at this stone on his way to Inis Oírr.
- Monarchan cniotála
One of the main sources of employment on the island is the knitwear factory. High quality men ‘s fashion knitwear is produced mainly for export to Europe, Japan and North America. There is a shop and an ongoing photo exhibition as well.

Knitwear factory offering locally produced Knitwear that is shipped all over the world. The factory has a shop where you can purchase goods directly and offers tax free shopping to visitors outside the EU
